Epilogue

The Cast of Characters

What happened to our cast of characters in the years following the experiment?

Prisoner #416, who broke down within 36 hours, got a clinical psychology Ph.D., did his internship in a California prison, and became a forensic psychologist in the San Francisco County Jail.

Craig Haney got a Ph.D. and an LL.D. from Stanford University, teaches Psychology and Law courses at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is one of the nation's leading lawyers handling prisoner litigation.

Christina Maslach became a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, married Philip Zimbardo one year after the Stanford Prison Experiment, was later elected President of the Western Psychological Association, and received the 1997 Case/Carnegie Foundation "Professor of the Year" Award, among other honors.

"John Wayne" is now a mild-mannered real estate broker.
